Problem with importing PST file

Guest

Hi, I have a problem with importing PST file in Outlook 2003 from one
computer to another (both with Outlook 2003). The outlook pst is about 1.2G
and the archive is about 170M. I have exported the files from my old computer
and tried to import them into the new one but an error message pops up saying
"...not compatable with this version of the Personal folders information
service...".

Can anyone help? Both files are not read only files and both are from
Outlook 2003. I have read somewhere that there are different formats of the
PST files (ANSI and Unicode) How do I determine this? How do I make the PST
files "compatable"?

Thanks

File-> New-> Outlook Data File... gives you the option to choose the format.
UNICODE is what you want in an all Outlook 2003 environment. Exporting
creates by default a UNICODE formatted pst-file. To check your current
format choose File-> Data File Management-> select pst-file-> Settings-> if
the fomat field says (97-2002) it is ANSI. If it only says Personal Folders
File it is UNICODE.

If it is ANSI and you want to have a UNICODE formatted pst-file choose
File-> New-> Outlook Data File... to create a new pst-file. After that copy
all your items (e-mails, contacts, etc...) to the new pst-file. Once you've
done that set it as your default delivery location in Tools-> E-mail
Accounts-> button Next and restart Outlook.

Dear Roady,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have tried what you described but I am still
unable to import the file to the other outlook 2003. and I still get the
message ""...not compatable with this version of the Personal folders
information
service...". Are there any settings I need to change when importing?

Thanks

Don't import. Connect to it directly via File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

Hey Roady,

Tried it again.... didn't work... other things I can try? Somehow the
outlook on my machine was able to take older versions of my back up pst
files..... however those files are too old (6months ago) to be of any use...
I have a feeling that the files that I am having problems with are already in
Unicode. Any thoughts on why this is still happening?

Thanks

Use scanpst.exe to check the file for errors.

I would start over. Instead of exporting on the main computer copy the
original pst-file and copy it to the oter computer. Then use File-> Open->
Outlook Data File... on the other computer to connect to it.

Dear Roady,

Thanks for the tip but got the same error message.

I copied the original "outlook" pst file from the path "documents and
settings/admin/local Settings/application data/microsoft/outlook" and ran the
pst repair again. The program found errors and fixed it. I went to the new
computer and opened the file with file->open->outlook data file. Still
getting the same error message...

Is there another method or format I can transfer the mails with attachments
over? Now I am really concerned because the backups that I have made over
the last few months might be useless....

Really need your help...

Thanks.
