Problem with IE7

I allowed IE7 to be installed this am. Immediately the gmail shortcut on my
desktop no longer worked nor does google desktop. I tried to reset the
shortcut. No luck. It says that it must be associated with an exe program.
When I did that it worked once and then said that it was going to close 2
tabs. When it closed them, it wouldn't work again. I use Firefox as my
default browser.

Tried to restore to before the IE7 install. Won't do it. Apparently
deleted the IE6 and can't go back. Any thoughts??

yes I allowed IE to install also and it is causing all sorts of
problems...and I can't restore it back to IE 6 either...I am now using
firefox as my browser. This IE7 sucks and I know that lots of people are in
the same situation as we are.

Have Add/Remove Programs display Windows Updates and you should see the
IE7 update. Remove it and IE6 will return.

I did that and now have IE6 back and running. Unfortunately, I also have
all of the same problems. I had a gmail shortcut icon on the desktop before
that worked. When I try to set up the shortcut now, I get an error message
saying the shortcut must refer to an exe program. I can't set up a shortcut
to a website anymore and must go through IE or firefox. Google Desktop has
quit working. I can only get it to go by being in IE and using the toolbar.
When I go directly to the google desktop exe, nothing happens.

Fix File Associations.

Depending on whether the link is a .lnk or .html file, you run the
appropriate association. You could try another install of IE7 too..

I fixed the problem using a tip from a Google posting. Google Desktop and
IE7 interfere with each other. The fix is:
start/run regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
start/run inetcpl.cpl
click program tab and reset web settings to default
click yes
click OK

this makes Google the default search engine and allows a desktop shortcut to
a website again. Google desktop now works. I haven't tried to reinstall
IE7. Leaving well enough alone for now.
