Problem with IE 6 browser and accessing sites

Every other time or so that I open my IE 6 browser to access a website I've
never been to, it loads v-e-r-r-y
slowly. When I hit the f5 key to refresh, the page usually then loads
quickly. I've done a defrag, ran several spyware programs (Microsoft, Spy
Sweeper, Spybot, Ad-Aware), etc. cleaned the registry and the temp cache +
cookies.

Any suggestions? Firefox does the same thing, btw. I also hear a 2
second elay between clicking my mouse and the actual time I hear the click
and see it's registered with the browser. Could this be the Avast web
shield and script shield playing havoc with Zone Alarm and the other anti-
spyware programs being loaded into memory (Spybot and Microsoft's Anti-
Spyware beta version)?

I have a similar experience with IE 6 but not with Firefox. I encountered
that opening the same pages requires more time in IE 6 than in Firefox
moreover the Java Applets run smoothly in Firefox but not through IE 6. Can
anyone tell why?

Go to: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware]

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Next, go to the below location:

Sign in, go to the "Malware Removal" section.
Press "New Topic" and post a description of your symptoms. If they need to
see your log they will ask for it.

Will do it, but I run hijackthis at least once every few days and don't
see anything unusual in there other than the following things that don't
immediately tell me what program it is.

Running processes:
E:\WINNT\System32\smss.exe
E:\WINNT\system32\winlogon.exe
E:\WINNT\system32\services.exe
E:\WINNT\system32\lsass.exe
E:\WINNT\system32\svchost.exe
E:\WINNT\system32\spoolsv.exe
E:\WINNT\System32\svchost.exe
E:\WINNT\system32\regsvc.exe
E:\WINNT\system32\MSTask.exe

Perhaps it can be my hosts file that's slowing me down?
