ie 6 problem

J

JHI

When I surf with IE 6 , I can go from site to site, but then with no
warning, I click some link, (and these are all regular sites, compusa, msn,
ebay, circuit city, etc) and the
browser just shuts down and I have to relaunch.

I did an Anti-virus scan, spy scan, the pop up blocker is not an issue, and
I re-loaded Win xp (yes I have sp 1&2). It happens when I use my DSL
connection or my dial-up connection. It only seems to happen when I select a
link.

Thanks.

First eliminate any spyware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Hello Frank,

I have a similar problem in that I have frequent online crashes. I
occasionally have the problem that Jeffrey described; however my more
pervasive problem is that the where I am will just "Stop Responding" aka
"freeze" or "Hang Up". It will take several minutes to close sometimes. In
order to continue with my work, after I click on the X and the window appears
with the ' end now' and 'cancel' options, I click on End Now. I then click on
the Minimize box (the window will minimize itself right away) I open another
explorer window and go back to what I was doing.

I usually choose the option to send a report when the problem occurs.
Lately, I've been getting the OCA Report. The first 10-15 times, I carried
out each step even if I had done them several times before. I have stopped
doing several of the steps becasue I figure that downloading SP2 5+ times,
it's installed. I regularly run spybot and ad-aware. I also have MS
Anti-Spyware for real-time protection and periodic scans. Same thing with
anti-virus software. All updates are done every time I use the software as
well as automatically where it's available.

In addition to the basic IE toolbar, I have MSN Toolbar Suite and Yahoo for
IE. I have only a few items from Yahoo such as TV Guide, Sports, calendar,
weather and 2 game site links. I mention these items as once or twice the OCA
mentioned a problem with something in the Yahoo add on; however I haven't
gotten that since I upgraded my Yahoo to the Yahoo for IE, I think. I'd be
most appreciative if you could suggest any other steps to try. I currently
have 56k dial-up modem, but I'm switching to SBC/Yahoo DSL within 1-2 wks. I
ahve 384 megs of memory in a Dell Dimension 2400 computer.

Thank you so much for your time.

Sincerely,
Sandie

PS I hope that I contacted you appropriately. This is my first time in one
of these rooms. I wasn't quite sure how to submit my problem. When I saw
Jeffrey's problem and it was so similar to mine, I thought I'd just barge in
to the conversation. Again, thank you for your time

1. Yes, perfectly properly
2. I'm not Frank but oh well :)

I think toolbars are risky, especially on dial up. I don't suggest MSN or
Yahoo are trying to do anything evil (unlike some of these spam/ad cowboys)
but these things do increase the flow of data back and forth and this is not
exactly "Spare" capacity on dial up, especially as ordinary web pages become
more active content intensive.

In my experience they also increase the risk of glitches such as the long
delays you mention. Can't prove this but I've run a clean IE for years and
have not had 1% of the trouble with it that people here regularly ask
questions about.

AntiVirus programs are by their nature invasive, and can take up a lot of
time. If you have one that's got "Everything" turned on and it's scanning
(for example) your temporary internet files this can conflict with IE and
other things - locking them out while the AV does it's job. I guess what I
am saying is that your problem with delays might be due to a setting that
you could change without increasing any risks.

Sometimes removing spyware breaks things, it's unavoidable because some of
the junk is designed that way either by intention or carelessness. Usually
though it breaks IE or your network connection all the time, not just
occasionally.

I would suggest you check you AV settings and turn off email scanning (which
contributes very little) and maybe stop MS antispyware running in the
background for a while as you try a few known good sites. You need to be a
bit more careful if you turn off the AV completely for testing purposes but
you can do this provided you are careful with email and preferably set the
option to read all in plain text in Outlook Express. Personally I'd also go
to start>control panel>add remove programs and remove the toolbars using the
proper method and remove anything else you see there that isn't an official
update or some software you definitely know you are using. Just ask if you
don't know what something is and someone here might recognize it.

You might also go to internet options and on the general tab delete files
and remove the temporary internet files. You can get rid of any stuff you
have stored locally too but this is unlikely to be your problem. For setting
there I tend to stick with automatic.

See what Frank has to say, I suspect you have had an encounter with spyware
but since the problem is not continuous a good clean up might be the simple
answer.

Charlie

I fixed the problem (with help). In Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>
Uncheck "Enable third party browsers..."

Thanks to all!

If you had posted using Outlook Express, I could tell you whether or not SP2
had successfully installed. If it had, your IE version would be 6.0.2900.

Like Charlie, I don't trust any of the addon toolbars.

I don't know what the OCA Report is.
