IE 6 search problem

T

thinman

Did a clean install of Win98 and then added the update patches as
provided by Gary Terhune. Loaded the following programs :

Software firewall
Cookie filter
Trojan Hunter
SpyBot & Destroy
Spyware Blaster
AVG anti-virus

-- all of which I had been using prior to the reinstall of the OS.

When I click on the "Search" button, the "Search" window pane
on the left opens as usual. I type in the "keyword(s)" that I'm looking
for and it returns the found links.

When I click on a link in the returned list of links in the left-hand search
window it opens in the search window itself instead of the right-hand main
window as it has done forever! ( Same as what Searay is experiencing
in his 09-30-07 post).

The one thing I noticed is that right above the search field , it displays
a "Windows Live" logo, which has not been displayed previously.
Any way to get this back to normal operation ??

thanks

See if an overinstall of IE6 SP1 fixes it:

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes
your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline). Start >
Run > (type in) IE6Setup.exe > [OK]. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all
the parts you use (e.g., Outlook Express) but none that you didn't
originally download, and overinstall. Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot
the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

T

thinman

Didn't work....I'm still getting a "Live Search" plus the Windows Logo
above the search field, just as what appears in WinXP Pro.

Is MS forcing updates to Win98SE without the users approval ???

thanks

Live Search is the new default for IE, not matter what Windows version.

Does the above behavior persist?

Still not displaying like it should. Yes, I am well aware of the fact
that WIN98 support died off a while back.

Am going to do another clean install (delete/set partitions & format)
and only install the Windows files. I've got the IE6 w/SP1 CD , so
I'll install it then connect to the MS update site for the cummulative
update package.

Well, deleted/set partitions again and then formatted. Loaded Win98SE .
Installed IE6 w/SP1. Setup Internet connection. Connected to Windows

Same deal. When I click on the Search button, the Search pane opens

Clicking

Get the .reg file at the bottom of this page to reset the default IE 6
search registry entries. Follow the instructions to unzip the file, read it
in text format, then change the extension to .reg and merge with your
registry. http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/42.html

If no joy, then the behavior of the site set as the one for the search pane
is not coded correctly, perhaps.

I use Google for my searches, and the search pane still behaves correctly.
Try installing the Google toolbar - http://toolbar.google.com If you'd
rather not use it, Google has .reg files to make it the default here:
http://www.google.com/options/defaults.html - scroll down to the "Make
Google Your Default Search Engine" section and use the second linked .reg
file mentioned in the sentence:
"By default, Google will show results in the search channel window, leaving
the main window for browsing. If you prefer seeing the search results in the
main window, try this file instead."

Situations like this have happened over the years going back to the IE 4
days when changes have been made via Windows Updates to the default IE
search settings.

Hi Jon,

The Live coders have screwed up.
Here is the head section from a ninemsn side search bar

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"

They are missing the <base target="_main"> in the head section.

Good job, Rob. Thought that may have been the case. This has happened
before, when they change default search sites - going back to when the first
search pane came out in IE 4.0.

Any way to get this back to normal operation ??

Well, deleted/set partitions again and then formatted. Loaded Win98SE .
Installed IE6 w/SP1. Setup Internet connection. Connected to Windows
update. Downloaded all the critical updates listed. Rebooted.

Same deal. When I click on the Search button, the Search pane opens
on the left side. If I type in a word to search for, it returns links.
Clicking
on a link causes the link to open in the left pane. Nothing in the right
pane.

Didn't work....I'm still getting a "Live Search" plus the Windows Logo
above the search field, just as what appears in WinXP Pro.

Is MS forcing updates to Win98SE without the users approval ???

thanks

See if an overinstall of IE6 SP1 fixes it:

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer
(includes your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going
offline). Start > Run > (type in) IE6Setup.exe > [OK]. Select
Minimal -
Custom; Select all the parts you use (e.g., Outlook Express) but none
that
you didn't originally download, and overinstall. Should take about 2
minutes. Reboot the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

Hi Bear,

Google will work fine in IE6 but loads the search result link in the Side
Pane in IE7 'cause they have <base target=_main> outsite the <head> block.
MSN/Live Sidebars load search result links in all versions of IE 'cause they
have completely omited the <base> tag.

Regards.

OP here is using IE6 in Win98 so let's not confuse the issue by bringing IE7
into the equation.

That being said, Google's my default here (IE7/WinXP) and the results do not
open in a "Side Pane" nor have I ever seen such a Search "Side Pane" since
IE7 Beta1. Of course, IE's default Search has never been enabled nor is
anything Windows Live installed on this machine short of WLMessenger (which
has hardly ever used).
