Problem With HP Scanner Software

I bought a new HP scanjet 3970 USB
The scanning software does not detect the attached Twain device (scanner).
The same goes for Paintshop Pro.

The scanner icon is displayed in My Computer and System Devices. When double
click XP offers me windows scanner wizard. The scanner does work with the
scanner wizard but is not detected otherwise.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled, returned the first scanner for a
replacement, still no change.

How do I fix this problem?

There are newer drivers on the HP site, maybe newer than what shipped with your
scanner. The drivers have a September time stamp; version 2.2, 200 MB download!!! May
take hours to download. There are many support documents as well.
