Twain/scanner problem in XP

Below is my problem. I do not know whether it is a problem with Windows XP
home, my setup, the software I am using or drivers but any help would be
appreciated:

I have a Mustek 1200UB scanner connected by USB.

In control panel the scanner exists under "scanners & cameras" , and it says
the device is ready & if I click test the light on the scanner moves & it
says it is OK.

In device manager it appears under imaging devices and the properties say it
is working properly.

I have scanning software - VueScan - but when I open it it says no scanner
found.

I have word, publisher & paint shop pro software all of which say they can
import from a twain device. All show the scanner in the list of twain
devices but all stop responding if I try and use it.

The scanner came with software that opens a scan dialogue box. If I open
that software and press preview or scan nothing happens.

I have an old windows 98 computer and the scanner works fine on that, and
when using the 3 software titles above they all open the scan dialogue box
when I select the scanner from the twain list.

Any idea where the problem might be?

My other twain devices in case it is relevant are a logitech quickcam web
camera, Epson FS200 negative scanner & an HP3100 printer/fax/scanner/copier.

I did not say it in my post but I had already downloaded and installed
updated XP drivers.

Also, since my post I found out I can use the scanner via ACDsee software -
I only just noticed that it had the facility to import from a twain device.
The only problem now is that ACDsee uses the original scan dialogue supplied
with the scanner 4/5 years ago and my experience with my negative scanner is
that modern software such as VueScan gives a much better picture so I want
to try & get my entires system to accept that the scanner is there so I can
use VueScan.

Thanks for trying to help though. Do you have any other ideas or are you
certain it is a driver problem?
