Problem With Games Working

P

Pat

I have Vista SP1 installed on my laptop and recently some of the games I
like to play will no longer work and new ones also.

The game specs say that they are Vista compatible so why won't they work on
my computer?

Any steps I can take to resolve this?

I haven't installed SP2 as yet, or IE8 because of all the problems I've read
about them so am waiting on those.

Do you get any error messages?

Check the application log on the system for any errors relating to the game.
You may also see other errors being logged

Right Click Computer | Manage | Expand System Tools | Expand Event Viewer |
Windows Logs | Application

It maybe related to a driver problem, has your machine done any updates
recently?

Which games ? telling us this may help in finding a solution.

No idea - maybe if you tell us about your computer (and the games) we may
have some chance in helping you. Please repost make model, memory, things
like graphics cards, sound cards etc and also what version of drivers you
are running on these etc for your machine.

We need more information on the current system, software and actually the
issue. You cay "no longer work" - so what happens? are there error
messages? if so which ones, or anything else happens system hangs games
hangs etc etc etc

Waiting on what to happen ? IE 8 has been out some time now and had a few
updates via Windows update, and the majority of SP2 users are not
experiencing any problems. So if you follow all the advice and guidance
that others have already posted here along with reading ALL of the Microsoft
notes about SP2 such as the release notes and other guidance you should not
have any major problems.

I checked the error log but it just says unknown error. I'm forwarding the
logs to Microsoft to see if they can tell me what it is by the numbers that
I don't understand.

My version of Vista is up-to-date except for SP2. I've downloaded all
updates but this doesn't seem to be one that is automatically updated so I'm
not sure if I should try to download it or not. I'm using Vista 64 bit.

What are the games you are trying to run as 16-bit programs aren't supported
on Vista 64-bit

FWIW,
I just downloaded that game to my Windows 7 64 bit computer.
It gave me the warning about detecting a 64 bit OS, and that the program may
not work.
I went ahead and installed it, and it seems to work fine, but I only tried
it for a minute.

Your problem is not with Vista vs. XP, it's with 64 bit vs. 32 bit.
If you were using XP 64 bit, you'd likely have the same problems.

The only problem I have with 64 bit is that it will not run any 16 bit
programs. But those are so old, there are not many of them that I wish to
use.

The most recent game is Detective Agency from BigFish games
(http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/5120/detective-agency/index.html).

Evidently it is not compatible with 64 bit systems, which mine is. Is
there any way around this? The more I use Vista, the more I dislike it!!!
Too much software is not equipped to work with it.

Any idea if Windows 7 will be any better?

I'd sure like to go back to Windows XP!

Hi,

I try to install the free version with Win 7 RC1 64-bit, and the installer
says that it doesn't support 64-bit and advises to downgrade to 32-bit.

So I guess, in this case, your problem might be because it's 64-bit version
which might be the same when using XP or Win 7.

Hope this helps and good luck.
