Problem with download

This week I had a virus which corrupted all my "exe" extention files. I cleaned all the files but most of them were deleted. I had to reinstall most of my applications including Windows XP and Internet Explorer. Since then, I have noticed that every time I'm finished with downloading files from the internet, the "open and "open folder" options do not appear. The box closes right after. What is the problem and what should I do to fix it. Are there any "exe" files still missing?
