Problem with com ports using the file and settings transfer wizard

Why does this have to be so difficult?!

First I buy a 128MB "keyring" type drive, on the theory that I can use this
to collect the data and transfer. (Since it won't let you use the CDRom, and
the new computer doesn't have a floppy drive.) But it will only work for the
first one, won't let me delete the file and put the next file on it.

Then I give in and buy, daylight robbery, a £20 serial file transfer cable,
plug it in to the com ports (at least I assume that is what the nine-pin
things are) - hit autodetect on both computers, and trying this several
times, leaving it for up to 20 minutes, nothing happens ... no error message,
just "trying" to detect.

How can I force the com ports to open, or the computers to recognise the
connection? (Been through all the help files and doesn't seem to be anything.)

All help most gratefully received ...! (Particularly since I've only got one
monitor and I am REALLY sick of crawling under the desk.)

So whats the problem with your memory stick?
You should be able to access it like any other drive in Explorer

For some reason with the memory stick it accepted the first file, but even
though I'd deleted it after copying it on to the new computer, when I went to
put the next file on, it the old computer alternately said either that the
old file was still there, or that the disk was corrupted. It was only going
to accept one stick per file.

I have anyway now finally solved the problem, by copying the whole huge
single file on to the desktop, then downloading that on to a PDA, then
reversing the process on the new computer.

Pity Windows didn't just suggest that (or indeed I think you could do the
same thing with a CDRom), instead of creating all the unnecessary
complications and two days of headaches.
