Win XP and Serial Com Port issues - Urgent!

Greetings to all ...

Here's my situation ... I have an application running on an XP PC
with SP1. This application "talks" to a serial port - com port #1. I
want to start another application at the same time and "talk" to the
same com port #.

How can I get the first application to "release" its access to com
port 1 (without rebooting) to allow application #2 to access Serial
com port #1?
