File Settings Transfer Question

I am helping a friend upgrade 4 workstations at his office. The first one
went fine, but it was an XP Pro to XP Pro transfer. I wasn't so lucky with
the second. It's a Windows 98 to XP Pro transfer. I first tried making a
transfer floppy. It was created fine by the XP machine, but gave a fatal
exception error on the Win98. Then I tried using the XP Pro CD and it went
through the drill fine, but said it needed 1400 floppies. Next try I used my
Maxtor USB removeable hard drive, but 98 couldn't see NTFS. I formatted my
removeable drive to FAT32, created the transfer file, but the XP machine
couldn't see it. I then bought a DCC cable, and tried that way. Everything
ran fine, the com ports were recognized, but when it started "transferring
files" it just sat for 30 minutes with no progress. I checked the com ports,
and one was set different, so I matched them up, tried again with the same
result. I'd like to get this one solved, because the other 2 are also Win 98.

Does your friend have a network setup at the office? If so, just
add the machines to the network and transfer using that method.

If not then you should either get a crossover cable or a router
and create a network between the machines. You should be able to
get a crossover cable at a local Staples, Best Buy, Circuit City
or CompUSA.

It says the network has to be in the same group, I imagine that's easily
remedied. That's why there is no network option in FASTWiz. The computer is
in a different office, and the network shares are by user, so I may try the
crossover idea BUT I don't know why none of the other methods worked.

Create a folder named C:\Transfer on the hard drive of the Windows 98
machines. Run FASTW on these machines and tell it to save the output
in the C:\Transfer folder.

When it has finished remove the hard drive and install it temporarily
as a second hard drive in the Windows XP Machine. Then run FASTWIZ on
the XP machine and tell it to import the data from D:\Transfer

I do this sort of thing all the time. What I normally do on the XP
machine is to unplug the power and data cables from the CDROM drive
and use these for the temporary second hard drive. That puts the
second hard drive on the Secondary IDE channel and avoids any need to
change any jumper settings etc.
