Transferring system

I'm gonna move my daughter's system from her old computer to a newer and
faster one. Both the old and new are running XP Pro.

I want to use the Easy Transfer wizard over a cable between the two. I see
lots of USB cables that are described as enabling transfers between [old] XP
and [new] Vista machines but none that say XP to XP.

Can I do this and, if so, what cable do I need?

OS needs to be "installed" to a paticular machine only,the hardware set up
for one in xp,will be diffrent on the other machine,thats just one
problem.Also,
the xp registration with microsoft isnt transferable to other pcs, "one
license-
one pc"....If by chance you simply want to move youre daughters settings &
data
from one pc to another using the File Transfer Wizard,thats easy
enough...1st,
for a pc to send data to another in youre home (home network),you'll need a
"crossover cable",they look just like a ethernet cable but are not..Any pc
shop
sells them for about 10.00 As for traansferring data,open the FTW from the
xp
cd,customize the data for it to collect,collect in a new folder,you
created,once
its thru,move to a cd,or move to new pc...

Thanks. It appears that I wasn't clear -- writing has never been one of my
strengths. Both PCs have their own copy of XP Pro. The process will be
just as if I had bought her a new Vista machine and wanted to transfer files
and setting to it, just that the new PC is not Vista but XP Pro.

You cannot join two computers with a USB cable. What you need is either:

A X-over LAN cable (Cat5, RJ45) with a shared folder on the source computer,
mapped to a drivletter on the destination.

Or, a USB disk-box to put the disk from the old computer in.

AS for the transfer, if the useraccounts are identically named I would
forget the FSTW. Instead, logged-on as Adminsitrator, transfer the entire
userprofile folder under 'Documents and settings' to the new computer. When
doing this you must have Explorer set to show hidden files.

Note: this will not transfer programs. Thus the desktop may heve defunct
icons until all required programs are reinstalled.

Just migrated an old system to a new system where both are running clean
installs of XP Pro and have a different approach than cabling directly
(although a simple ad hoc network via wireless network adapters, or setting
up a simple firewire network would do ok if those devices are available on
your computers.)

Assuming both computers can connect to the internet.... We'll instead take
advantage of two freebies from Microsoft. One is the User State Migration
Tool, USMT. Download at

and the other is a free 30GB online Windows Live SkyDrive account.....

This is very simple.... LOG IN AS AN ADMINISTRATOR on the computer to
install and run the USMT. It will walk you through the process. It packages
up all the User Profile info and files into one nice neat package that you
can then upload to your Skydrive account (or burn to CD) (Also remember to
back up any docs/files outside of the users hive/folder structure....
hopefully there aren't any but take look around in explorer and either move
them into the user's document folders or back up to cd seperately)

Install USMT ( ADMINISTRATIVE LOGIN ) on the new machine, run USMT and
provide it with the name of the user profile info that you want to import.
USMT pretty much handles putting everything in place on the new computer.

DO NOT BE PUT OFF BY THE DOCUMENTATION ONLINE > ITS OVERKILL.
USMT is a very easy tool to use in spite of its power.
