Problem sending large attachments

H

Hal Scoggins

I have Outlook 2003, running under XP Home Edition.

I'm experiencing a problem that I can't find any mention
of in Microsoft's knowledgebase. When I send a message
with a large attachment (2MB or larger), the message gets
sent multiple times. Basically, Outlook sends it
repeatedly until I stop it. This happens consistently,
most recently just last night. I sent a message with a
1MB attachment a few minutes before, and it went just
fine. When I sent the 2MB message, I noticed that it was
staying in the Outbox folder much longer than the 1MB one
had, so I stopped it, and sent a separate message to the
intended recipient asking him if he had received it. He
had - 3 times.

Anyone else having this problem, and/or know of a fix?

Yes, your problem seems unique. I send attachments (some very much
larger) with Outlook 2003 with no problems whatsoever.

Sending email is a joint venture between the email client and email
server. The email is handled by an exchange of information using the
standard protocol.

Have you consulted with the people who administer the email server? Can
they take a look at the logs on their end? Have you tried another email
client, e.g. Outlook Express or Mozilla (which is free) to isolate the
issue.

In addition to look in the Knowledge Base, perhaps also try searching
outlook and email related newsgroups in at Google: http://groups.google.com

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

One possible cause may be that you have an automatic send/receive scheduled
at an interval smaller than the amount of time needed to send the large
file. Outlook starts to send it, the next send/receive interval falls due,
Outlook sees it in the Outbox and starts to send it.

No, Hal's problem is not unique. It's happening to a lot of people, but on
different threads. I'm using Outlook 2002 on an XP Standard platform, and
anything over 1M re-sends over and over. It seems to have happened after
either the SP2 or SP3 upgrade (I did them both on the same day). I've tried
to uninstall the SP2 and SP3, and also to use the repair function on the
installation disk. I've also uninstalled *just* Outlook and reinstalled it.
But I haven't gotten up the nerve to complete uninstall Office, due to data
loss issues. Right now, I'm having to use Hotmail to send large attachments,
but I would like to fix Outlook. Any help appreciated!

1) Create a new profile - does it help?
2) disable any firewall or antivirus scanners from checking email
3) are you using a router, especially a linksys?

1) No. A new profile does not fix it. Good thought, though.
2) Already done. No effect when disabling virus scanner.
3) No router. Standard Agere AC '97 internal modem. Dial-up 24.8Kbs
connection.
4) All auto send/receive unchecked to disable (in Options), then program
rebooted to establish.
5) Time-out (in Accounts) set to maximum 10 minutes (which used to be
sufficient for up to 5M.) Program rebooted.
6) No change in ISP account or provider.
7) Appears to have started after either SP2 or SP3 upgrade (I downloaded
both on same day).
8) Attempted repair feature from Office 2002 disk. No effect.
9) Tried re-install feature from Office 2002 disk. No effect.
10) Haven't tried to uninstall SP2 or SP3, because I don't know the proper
title of the upgrade and don't want to have to uninstall and reinstall every
one of them with such a slow connection (it takes hours!) If I have no other
choice, I will, but there should be an easier patch!

Thanks! Any help appreciated!
