Problem sending email

D

David Venables

Hi,

Vista Home Premium SP1
Version 2009 (Build 14.0.8064.0206)

I'm trying to send an email but keep getting asked to set up a new email
account and then getting the following message:

Information About HTTP E-mail

Windows Mail no longer supports the HTTP servers used by Hotmail and other
web-based e-mail providers. Click the Back button to set up a different
e-mail account, or see other options for accessing your web-based e-mail.

My main email account is a 'Hotmail' one, and it would be really
inconvenient
to change it.

When I exit the Wizard it says, 'You do not have any accounts configured for
sending email. Please verify your account configuration'.

Can I configure this program for a 'Hotmail' account?

I don't have problems sending any other emails.

Thanks for your time,
David

I don't have problems sending any other emails.

Of course not - they probably are using POP not HTTP.
Thanks for your time,
David

I think you have probably one option, and that is to upgrade to Windows Live
Mail, which will, AFAIK, accept Hotmail accounts.

Windows Live allows POP3 and SMTP access now. Use the Windows Live "Help"
search function while logged in online for the server details. POP3 servers
do not retain downloaded email unless you configure the client to leave
email on the server.

Please tell us the version of the application you are asking about,
your OS, Service Pack level
and the FULL contents of any error message(s)
Thanks, Gordon, for replying.

I am a bit disappointed in the fact you seem to mock my ignorance. I
perhaps explain things in a really basic manner so I hopefully get across
the problem I am having. Thanks, anyway.

Thanks, Norman. It's sorted now.

David, start again please, the Version 2009 (Build 14.0.8064.0206) is NOT
Windows Mail, but in fact Windows Live Mail.

It is possible to set up Hotmail accounts in both programs now.

So please clarify which of the two programs you are having a problem with?

Yes, I am running Windows Live Mail.

Here is the trick needed, to set up the Hotmail, Live etc account in WM.

Start with a new account setup and use (e-mail address removed)
Setup the account with the correct server, port and SSL settings, (below),
save
it, ignore errors, then go back and enter the correct email address
and (e-mail address removed) or msn.com or live.com

Try the following settings for Hotmail or Live accounts?

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example (e-mail address removed)
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows
Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Windows Live Mail can access your http Hotmail account, like you may have
with OE.
Or, you can access it using POP3, as Steve instructed.

Well done Steve, that's fixed it.

I had posted on another newsgroup that the problem had been fixed because I
was getting advice I wasn't really understanding, so thanks for the clear
instructions.

Just one more question. I now have two accounts with the same email address,
is it okay to delete the old one or do I need to keep both?

Before I answer that one:

Are both the accounts set up in the different Mail Applications?

Or are they both in the same one, if so which, WM or WLM?

I am trying to find out what my main email address is for Microsoft Outlook.
I do have a yahoo account as well, and I keep being asked about POP and HTTM
mails or whatever. Since Outlook is not recognizing these emial providers,
is there a way that you know of to use Microsoft Outlook primarily? I just
want to know how to do it.

Outlook doesn't have an email address unless YOU set one up.

Go to your Mail Provider's web site (usually your ISP) and they will almost
certainly have a page on how to set up your email in several of the most
popular email clients.

For the most part, an email address is not tied to a specific email program.
You can pretty much set up any email address in any email program, with
a few limitations.

US-based free Yahoo accounts have webmail access only, no POP access.
Windows Mail and Outlook handle POP mail but not Yahoo webmail.
Yahoo's solution is to pay for premium "Mail Plus" service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/overview/index.html
and use the special settings for that service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/pop/pop-14.html

If you are OK with using a non-Yahoo email address, you have these other
solutions that will work with Outlook or Windows Mail:
* Use the email address assigned to you by your ISP.
* Use a free Gmail, AOL, or Hotmail/Live account.

If you need more help with any of these solutions, just ask.
