Cannot send or receive emails

I set up a gmail account yesterday so I would be able to use Windows Mail as
my hotmail account wasn't suitable. Now when I try to receive my emails, I
get the following error message:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.googlemail.com ',
Server: 'pop.googlemail.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

When I try to send an email I get this message:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject '', Account:
'pop.googlemail.com', Server: 'smtp.googlemail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first.

Number: 0x800CCC78

I get these messages repeatedly, I've also tried adding my account details
so they'll work but I really don't know what's going on. Please help.

Gmail doesn't use ports 110 and 25. You have to change both port numbers as
per

Tools>accounts>select the gmail account>properties>advanced tab, change the
port numbers to SMTP 465 and POP 995>Apply/ok

Ensure pop3 is enabled in the Google web UI options.
