Recently every time I save a word file it saves it as an Excel file. I have
checked the settings and carried out detect and repair without sucess. Any
suggestions?

Given that Word does not have the ability to save as Excel (other than with
a very old converter that should have been disabled by security updates)
something else is going on here? I suspect that Windows is configured to
have Excel as the default application for Word documents and so Windows
shows the documents as such. They will still be Word documents and you
should still be able to open them from Word.

To correct the problem, first see how to re-register Word when problems crop
up opening files
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm and if that doesn't
fix it select a document in Windows Explorer, right click and choose Open
with...

From the ensuing dialog select Word (winword.exe) and check the box to
always open with this application.
