cannot save modified file with the same filename

I recently bought a new system with Win7 Home Premium and Word 2007. I copied
all of my address files (.doc) over to the new system. I notice that when I
open one of these .doc files and change it I cannot save it back to the same
filename. The Save As dialog box repeatedly pops up until I either cancel the
save or save the document with a different name. I can always save the
document with a different name and then delete the original file and rename
the newly saved file. Once the file is changed I have no problem changing
that file again and saving it. This only happens on the first attempt at
modification. I have about 100 address files and can reproduce this every
time. I open the file by navigating to the folder that contains the address
files and double-clicking the file to bring up Word 2007. The same thing
happens if I start Word first and use File->Open to open the address file.

They were copied over to the target machine on my home network (map a share
and copy). I see no indication under file properties to indicate they are
read-only. I have reproduced this on a second Win7 machine by copying these
same documents from the original XP system to the second target Win7 system.

the 24th. None of the suggestions listed helped. I tried them all except for
the MyDocuments suggestion (which I will try today).

Tried the My documents suggestion but it did not help. The only difference I
can see between a file I can save and one I cannot is the "Details" tab under
file properties is populated more fully for the file I can save back to.

Even taking this further I am unable to change the Authors attribute the
bottom of the explorer window for the file. The error I get is Error
0x800300FB: the file is not a valid compound file. I downloaded Compound File
Explorer. When I try to open the suspect file in CFX I get the error
"Unrecognised file format. The file is not an OLE structured storage file.
Now if I open the suspect file in Word, save it with some other name, and
try to open that newly saved file with CFX it opens fine.
