Problem running chkdsk

J

Josie

Attempting to defrag I get the message that chkdsk is scheduled, etc.
Tried the routine of running chkdsk /f from "Run" and then confirm I
want it to run on next startup but it doesn't

Also not able to find a way to install Recovery Console (don't have XP
disk only Reinstall Disk from Dell.)

Any suggestions on how to run chkdsk?

Been screwing with this all day...

Hi,

See if your I386 folder is on the hard drive under C:\Windows. Make sure you
set folder options/view to see hidden and system files/folders. If so, then
to install the Recovery Console locally, run:

C:\Windows\I386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

Youre syntext is incorrect,it should be:CHKDSK C: /F It's suppose to be run
from cmd prompt.Go to run,type:cmd In cmd type:CHKDSK C: /F The recovery
console needs a cd copy of xp,plus it must be installed before SP2 to follow
nutcase suggestion.

No, CHKDSK /F works fine from either cmd prompt or on the Run line, you
only need to specify the drive letter if checking a disk other than the
default.

From Recovery Console use CHKDSK /P.

Thanks to all who posted a response. I finally managed to get the Recovery
Console running and ran chkdsk /r which let me then defrag. (Did I ever need
it.)
Thanks again.
