Problem Running Anti-Spyware

This is a follow-up to the message I posted in General Discussion,
"Anti-Spyware Won't Run" - After doing System Restore, the program will not
run though it updates. Before the System Restore I updated to Defender. I do
not want to update to Defender at this time because, after downloading it
initially, there
developed an information line cutting my windows in half every time I opened
Internet Explorer. What is the problem with Anti-Spyware?

I found overnight that Anti-Spyware does run; however, it does not display
the usual graphics I was accustomed to seeing when it ran previously. So, I
was not sure if it actually ran. Is there a way I can correct this?

The new app has a lot less to say than the old one. If the scan had found
anything, there would be a history entry showing what was found and what
action was taken, assuming that you have the box checked under tools,
general settings, "apply actions on detected items after scanning." If that
box were unchecked the app would be waiting for you to supply disposition
choices in the morning, I believe.

When Anti-Spyware last ran it did not find anything. The options you
mentioned under Settings are all checked.

If the time of last scan is updated, and you are not seeing anything in
history, or getting screens that notify you of results, then it is scanning,
and you're clean. Lots of machines are in that category--it's a good way
to be.

Thank you. It's good to know it is working; however, it use to display
graphics while scanning (i.e., files being moved). Why won't this work and
how can I repair it?

OK - that's clearer. The scanning involves, as I understand it, a
command-line app: mpcmdrun.exe, and the Windows Defender service--both of
which run in the background.

However, if, while a scan is running, you open the user interface--i.e.
"run" windows defender (in this case msascui.exe)--you should see the
scanning activity--see the names and locations of the files being scanned.

If you initiate a scan manually, with the user inteface open, you should see
this activity. If the scan is scheduled, the user interface does not
normally open, nor do you get other notice that the scan is in progress.
However, if you open the UI--you should see the scan taking place.

Yesterday morning I started Anti-Spyware. It is still open with the words
"Scanning memory locations and processes." No graphics appear. This time I
had it run the full scan, not the Quick Scan it ran before. Apparently it is
not running on this setting. Why?

Sorry--I've been completely on the wrong page on this one--I thought we were
talking about Windows Defender.

For Microsoft Antispyware and this symptom, I would try this:

1) Open up a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd)
2) Type in the following "regsvr32 msvbvm60.dll" (without the quotes).
3) Close and re-open Windows AntiSpyware

I just followed your instructions and it still is not repaired. Does this
require a restart?

Louis

No- a restart should not be required for that fix.

I'm feeling pretty rusty at my Microsoft Antispyware repair skills.

Have you tried: Start, control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft
Antispyware, change, update?

Your last set of instructions seemed to fix the problem. Thank you.
