Problem reinstalling from XP CD

I have had major problems with my installation on my laptop (overheating,
many crashes etc - btw the overheating is not due to dust etc or the fan). I
decided to reformat and reinstall XP from the CD on bootup (kicks into setup)
however everytime you go through the windows setup routine it gets to the
same point (loads all the drivers then opens the windows setup screen then
immediately crashes the laptop. I know the CD is OK as I tried it on another
PC but I cannot seem to run setup on this one. fyi - Windows XP has been
runniing on the laptop for about 2 years and so it need a refresh anyway to
clear out the dros :). I have backed everything up and just want to reformat
and reinstall, I cannot find any thread that will help.

It sure sounds like you have a hardware problem.
I would first go to the laptop manufacturer's site and download a BIOS
update. (If you're not familiar with updating the BIOS, it's just a matter
of finding the update and getting it on a floppy, then booting the compter
from the floppy and running the update. The site will have instuctions.)

If you still have the problem, find a hardware diagnostics program for your
particular computer and run that. Most major manufacturers give you a
bootable CD that includes the hardware diags. Hopefully it will find the bad
component if there is one and maybe you can replace it yourself. If you're
lucky you won't have to deal with that, as maybe you just need the BIOS
update.
