Problem recording to DVD's

Hello,

I'm having a problem recording to DVD's. Normally I use Nero 6 for
recording. When I use the Nero backup utility it seems to record alright
but then I get tons of errors verifying. I tried using the Windows backup
and then burning the back up file to DVD. That seemed OK until I tried to
restore a test file and the file couldn't be found on the DVD. I downloaded
another burning program which seemed to work until I tried to restore a file
and I got read errors.

I've tried a couple different brands of DVD's. CD's seem to burn alright.
Will a drive still burn a CD if it has problems burning DVD's? I guess I'm
thinking I have a drive problem.

It would probably be help to say that this is an older HP, maybe 5 years
old, running XP Home. I think SP2 is installed but I'm not sure. I'm not
near it right now.

Any thoughts?? Thanks much..

CD and DVD use separate lasers. One may fail and the other will be
unaffected.

If you look at the reviews here, they scan the burned disks for errors, and
the error scan is what tells how well the burner handles a certain
brand/tag of media. Nero has an error scanner, but when I had a Liteon,
I liked Kprobe for the task.

They have reviewed a lot of different brands of drives. Some drives are
compatible with more media, than others. Note there is an archive link
at the bottom of the page, with more reviews.

If you go into the archive section, and read more of the really old reviews,
they interpret the error curves there for you. Errors are really only important
when they are so bad as to be uncorrectable - some errors will always be present
and are OK. But disks, where the error rate spirals up, in the second half of
the disk, are the ones that'll just about hang your reader, when you try to
read them.

You'll spend more on "test media", trying to find good disks to burn,
then you'll spend on the drive itself.

The HP is an older model. Maybe 5 years old now. Yes I know it needs to be
replaced. Tell my wife that. The DVD was added a couple of years ago.
What I find that seems to work is to just burn the DVD with out verifying
the data. That way the backup completes successfully. After that I restore
a few test files to make sure the disc is readable.

I appreciate all the thoughts on this...
