Hello all,

I am a complete computer dunce so please bear this in mind if posting
solutions to my problem. My problem is this, all of a sudden and for no
apparent reason I can no longer receive email from the 2 POP3 email accounts
that I have with different ISP's. I can send OK but not receive. I have
not installed any new software. Microsft applied updates in the past 7 days
which are done automatically. I didn't really take any notice of what they
were but I'm pretty sure they had nothing to do with Outlook. Aside from
that plus the regular Norton Anti-Virus/Systemworks updates I have not
touched a thing. I am having the same problem with Outlook Express. The
Internet and Microsoft website did not offer any solutions so I find myself
turning to you wise and knowledgeable people. I have done the 'Test Account
Settings' in Outlook and 4 out of 5 tests are OK except for 'Log onto
incoming mail server (POP3)'. I use ADSL broadband. As I said at the start
I am a bit of a computer dunce. Usually I can fumble my way through
problems but not this one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
in advance.

Try temporarily turning off mail scanning by the Norton products. See if it
makes any difference

Thanks Vince,

In my haste I probably forgot to add that I did turn off the Norton
Anti-Virus and the McAfee Spam Killer that i have on my computer but still
have the same problem. Don't know if you're familiar with Spam Killer or
not but the curious thing is that Spam Killer can receive my emails but I
can't send a fake error message to the sender of spam mail. It will send
with one of the POP3 accounts but not the other one. Make sense? Anyway,
long story short, I have turned off the anti-virus and spam mail programs
but the same problem exists. Thanks for trying.

Do both accounts use the same SMTP (outgoing mail) server?

Both accounts use a different SMTP server. I forgot to add (just in case
someone asks) in my previous message that I also turned off my Sygate
firewall but it still didn't fix the problem. I did read in a Google group
that someone who was experiencing a similar problem to me seemed to think
that his problems started after downloading the October patches? I reckon
you replied to that guy Vince.

I may have or any number of MVPs or others might have.

Which network are you on right now? Typically an SMTP server will only
accept traffic from its own network.

Check the incoming mail server settings in outlook. Check they are not set
to 127.0.0.1 as i have seen this reset by AV packages in the past. If it is,
have a look on the mail providers website for their pop3 server address and
enter this instead.

At the moment I am using, or trying to use, optusnet.com.au. I assume that
is what you were after? The SMTP is mail.optusnet.com.au

As best as I can tell the incoming mail server settings are correct and have
not changed. The settings are the same as the outgoing mail server
settings, i.e., mail.optusnet.com.au.
