Problem printing from WinXP to W2K

I have a Lexmark Z35 printer which is shared on a Win2K
computer.
A laptop running WinXP can apparently connect to the
printer and see the status of the printer, but when
trying to print, the print job fails and I am left with a
stuck print job in the print queue on the W2K machine. It
looks as if the first few Kbytes of the job are spooled,
but then it fails.
Any help that can be provided would be VERY helpful!

verify that the connected user has write access to the spool directory
Winnt\system\spool\printers
