Problem changing context menu for .gif files

R

Rick

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer 7

I'm trying to changing the Context Menu for .gif files.
Presently it is as follows:

Preview
Edit
Print
Preview
===============
Open With >
Internet Explorer
Paint
Adobe Photoshop CS2
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
Paint Shop Pro 8
Microsoft Office Picture Manager

First I want to delete the "Open With > Internet Explorer" item.

I make a change to the registry as follows; deleting the "iexplorer.exe"
string value:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.gif\OpenWithList]
"a"="mspaint.exe"
"b"="Photoshop.exe"
"c"="shimgvw.dll"
"d"="Paint Shop Pro.exe"
"MRUList"="abcd"

But the instant I right click on a .gif file, the "iexplorer.exe" string
value magically reappears!!
I've been successful at deleting the "Open With > Internet Explorer" context
menu item for .jpg and .bmp files.
But with .gif files it keeps coming right back.

I also desire to delete the second "Preview" in the top section and can't
find it in the registry anywhere.

Can anyone tell me how to permanently delete "Open With > Internet Explorer"
and the second "Preview" items in the context menu for .gif files? I don't
understand why after I delete the "iexplorer.exe" sting value it restores
itself with just a single right click on a .gif file.

Hi Rick,

Download FileExtInfo.zip tool, unzip and run it. Select .GIF from the list and generate a report. Post the entire contents here.

That worked well. Can you make anything of this?

The 2nd "Preview" can be removed using the following steps:

Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
Navigate to the following branch:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\giffile\shell\open\command

Backup the key by exporting it to a REG file.

Double-click the (default) value in the right pane, and set its data as:

rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1

Close Regedit.exe

The 2nd problem should also be resolved (iexplore.exe should no longer add to the OpenWithList)
