Problem adding RAM running XP... HELP!!!

I added 256 RAM, along with the 128 RAM already there. Everything worked
fine. So now I have 384 mb of RAM. Today, I added another 256 RAM, same make
and model, but my computer goes crazy. My Dell troubleshooting guide says I
can max at 768 mb and covers what needs to be done for Windows 98 and NT, but
not XP.

Can anyone help me please?

Ok so you have two 256M Ram modules - one of which might be faulty. Try
fitting the known good 256 and 128 then REPLACE the working 256 with the new
suspect 256 module. Does that work? If it doesn't then the new 256M module
is probably faulty.

Also read manual carefully. My motherboard can take a max of 1, 2, or 3 chips depending on speed of the memory.

Check your motherboard manual, sometimes you can only place double sided
memory modules in the first and second slot, not all three.

Check your computer's manual for details. Note that you shouldn't
replace any RAM modules if you do not comply with the ESD guidelines
(Electrostatic Sensitive Devices). Otherwise, the modules may have
gone south.
