ram and it says that I have 384 mb of ram,but when I do a disk defragmenter

You are confusing the space you have on a hard disk with the amount of RAM
that you have. You have 384MB of RAM.

Are you confusing memory (RAM) with Hard Drive space or is there a specific reason you expected additional memory to create more available hard drive space?

The 4.6 GB of free hard drive space certainly looks to be around 24 percent of the 18.6 GB total capacity. In the meantime, you still have 384 MB of RAM.

Hi,
When you want to have more free space in your disk, I suggest you try the
following:

Goto Start->All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup.

Disk cleanup will help you clean up disk from the unwanted items which you
can comfortably delete like
* Temporary Internet Files
* Downloaded Program Files
* Office Setup Files
* Recycle Bin
* Setup Log files
* Temporary Files
* Temporary Offline Files
* Compress old files

You can comfortably check mark everything and the wizard will do the rest
for you.

Trust this has been of help to you.

Thanks,
Karthik Ragavan

How, exactly, did you expect adding RAM to impact your hard drive's
storage capacity? The two are completely unrelated.

You're mixing up two different things. RAM is memory, the work
space that your computer uses to operate in. When you turn off
your computer, the contents of RAM goes away.

The numbers reported by Disk Defragmenter refer to the space
available on your hard disk drive, not RAM. The hard drive is a
place where the operating system, programs, and data are stored.
What you put there stays there, even when you power off, until
you delete or change it.

Adding 256MB of RAM was good. Having only 128MB is really not
enough for Windows XP, and the addition should have made a
substantial improvement in the speed of your computer. But it has
no effect on the amount of disk space available.

If you want more hard drive space than add a new hard drive.

Disk defragmenter is dealing with the space on hard disk; not with ram

Please , some help needed; I have an emachine running win xp home with 128mb
of ram. I installed another stick with 128 mb.I'm confident that it is
installed correctly and is the right match.When I restart ,Windows will not
run, showing a variety of options, including problem with win32k.sys and
page_fault_in_nonpaged_area suggesting that I restart in "safe mode'. When I
choose "safe mode" windows will still not start. Walk me through the
procedure please!!!!! thanks in advance.

It appears the memory does not match. XP is very finicky about memory.
Try it with just the new stick. Does it boot ok? If not then that
stick is bad. Try again with both sticks. If there is a problem then
the memory is not matched. Try buying two sticks from the same vendor
at the same time or install one larger stick.

Also don't hijack another thread, post one of your own. And consider
using a newsgroup reader to access these groups instead of the awful web
interface. XP comes with one, Outlook Express.
