Probem with copying to Memory stick

T

Tracy

I have a 1GB Scandisk memory stick and was attempting to download 340 pics
amounting to approx 380MB's on to it from my Computer (XP) and when it was
just about finished this message popped up- "Cannot copy DSC327: The
Directory or file cannot be created."
The photo that was not copied just happened to be the last photo of the 340.
The rest were copyed just fine.
I tried to copy again several times different photos on to the same memory
stick with the 239 pics on it from another folder and got the same error
message.
One last attempt I tried to download the same photos onto a 2GB Memory stick
and got the same message. I just cannot download any more pictures on either
of the Memory sticks. They cannot be full? Does anyone have any suggestion
that might help me?

Is it possible that the file in question has been recently opened or
accessed with a program ? You may have a File Handle opened
on that file. None of the other conditions ( size, file count ) would
account for the inability of Explorer to successfully copy it. It' also
possible the file itself may be corrupted - can you open and view
the contents of DSC327 ?

You may also want to do a Read-Only Chkdsk on the source volume.

You can only have so many files in the root. Is this where you are
installing them? If so, try creating a folder and place them in there. See:

DSC327 wasn't the only file that it happened to. Other attempts got same
message only with a different file. What is a File Handle opened mean? Also
how do I perform a Read-Only Chkdsk on the source volume.
Thanks for the help.

An Open file handle means an application or operating system has a
file opened for access. In some cases that will prevent other apps or
functions from gaining use of the file.

To run a Chkdsk:
Click Start, Run ( Type ) cmd [Enter]
(Type)
Chkdsk C: [Enter]
If the volume/disk is "Dirty" then Chkdsk will report that it found errors
it was unable to resolve. It recommends a alternate run of Chkdsk with
a /F qualifier that tells the OS to fix the issues and can only be done at
the early part of the boot sequence before Windows has fully loaded.
To queue up a boot-time chkdsk you have to re-enter the command &
add a /F or /R to it and then answer Y to schedule it at the next boot.
*Chkdsk with Fix or Repair can make changes to the volume that may
result in data loss. DO NOT run Chkdsk /F /R unless your drive is
fully backed up or imaged.

Do you know what I mean Tracy? Make a folder and copy the files in there. As
your problems will go away.

Here's something to try: Delete the files, create a subfolder and copy
the files to there.

Bill, I did copy all the photos into one Folder on the PC and then copied the
contents of the entire folder into the memory stick and at the very end, I
got the same message the it could not create the particular
file,................... then when I attempted to copy one or more files into
the memory stick it would not do it. Can't figure it out.

It doesn't really matter if they came from a folder or not. But that many
files must live in a folder on the memory stick too. You cannot have that
many files without being inside of a folder. And to create a folder, you
have to delete a file or a few at least before you will be allowed to create
a folder.

Bill, McCarty, I finally figured out the problem. When I copied from the pc
folder to the memory stick, I just highlighted the MS/MSPro Drive and clicked
copy. I did not open up the MS/MSPRO Drive and then the DCIM folder and
finally the 101MSDFC folders and then clicked copy. Doing that I didn't get
the message and now I can add other photos when I want to. The photos are for
a digital frame that I have bought for my mother that shows all the
grandchildren or in her case the great grandchildren.

Thanks for your help.
