Memory stick troubles...

When I open my memory stick up to view the photos it says it's empty but when
I go to delete the file those photos are in it says "Cannot remove folder
100Canon: The directory is not empty." I've deleted this file before but now
it won't let me. I'm also missing several pictures. I have tried showing
all hidden but the "properties" thing says 0 mb. If there is nothing in
there why does it say "not empty"?
Thanks!

Does this memory stick fit into a camera? As some of them have their own
utilities and you shouldn't use Windows Explorer to modify or format
them. Checking with the documentation would be a good start.

Memory sticks are formatted with the outdated FAT(16) file system by
default in many cases, even when holding several GB. Therefore, the
first thing to do is reformatting the stick with FAT32. Memory sticks
having 1 GB and more should be formatted with NTFS unless being used
with older systems (Win98/Me). So I guess that you did not do that and
that you're running that particular stick with "good" ol' FAT being
damaged now.

My Computer > right click that drive > Properties > Tools tab. Test that
drive and tick the option to correct any error automatically. If this
doesn't help, your data will be lost most likely. Note also that the
life cycle of memory sticks does not last very long unless "designed for
ReadyBoostâ„¢".

Addendum: As posted by others and just in case that the memory stick was
used *directly* in combination with a digital camera, it should *not* be
formatted using Windows. This applies to any media (eg. SmartMedia card)
as well.
