Printing takes almost 100% cpu power

I run XR pro. with 384 mb ram. I use a HP deskjet 710 printer which when
printing takes almost 100% cpu power, making all other actions very slow to
react. Can anyone help me with this problem?

I've witnessed this with a lot of HP's current ink jet printers. Even with
updated drivers you'll still take a performance hit when a print job is
underway. I suspect that this is not going to change, but I'd be very
interested in any solutions that folks may have.

Kind Regards,

That's because you installed the entirely bloated HP software from the
CD instead of the printer driver alone thru Add Printe Wizard. Common
problem. Uninstall all the HP crap and start over, do NOT autorun the HP
CD. Use Add Printer and browse to the CD directory that contains the
printer .inf file and install that.

Thanks for your suggestions. Have tried closing down the anti virus without
results and checked for the latest driver with HP, nothing new since
10-2001!!! Will now try re.installing the software as steve suggests. Seems
like a good idea.

HP deskjets don't work with the old HP drivers; you need to use the
generic Deskjet driver that comes with the system. It misses out on
Bells and Whistles but does perfectly good printing. And only uses 4%
or so on an 880c, once the initial few seconds have passed
