HP820Cse - Slow Printing

D

Don R

I have an HP 820Cse Deskjet printer that seems very slow since I
installed Windows XP. Each page of my tax return took what seemed like two
minutes to print. Even printing the printer test page seemed slower than
normal. Under Windows 98 it seemed much faster. I checked task manager and
found that my CPU is maxed out at 100% while the printer is printing. The
CPU is an AMD-1800XP processor. Memory is good with 150 meg free. I
cheeked out printer settings and could find nothing that might have an
effect on the printer speed. Has anyone else had a similar problem or are
there settings I've overlooked? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Don Rist

PS - My email address is inactive. Putting up my real one invites numerous
emails with viruses attached. Please reply to the news group. Thanks, Don

Did you get the most recent drivers from HP's website? If you are using
the basic drivers built into Windows, try installing HP's drivers
instead.

Did you disconnect the print when you did the upgrade to XP?
Are you using USB or parallel cables?

Suggest you remove the printer with device manager and
reinstall the printer software with the printer unhooked
until the software asks you to connect it. I also suggest
you use USB.

The Windows XP driver is installed and seems to be working properly. I
checked the HP Web site and for the 820Cse it says to use the Windows XP
driver instead of the one that came with the printer.

I can't remember how I installed it. I believe the printer was off, that is
powered down, when I installed XP. As soon as I turned it on XP recognized
the printer and correctly installed the driver. Windows correctly shows the
printer as a HP 820Cse. As for the printer cable, I'm using the same
parallel cable I've used for years. There is no way I know of that a USB
cable can be connected to this printer. It was made before USB ports became
available.

I received the same info to use the Windows Drivers on my 820Cse, but I used
the HP ones instead and I had more print options and was about 25% faster
also.

That is a simple default XP printer driver, HP hasn't
bothered to write a real driver for a lot of older printers,
it may not be as fast.

The good news is that new printers have more features, cost
less and run faster.

If your printer software does allow you to do so, set the
printer to use draft or fast mode, it save ink too.

Your real answer is a new printer.
