Printing problems with Windows XP Pro

I have a PC using Windows XP Pro SP1.0 and using a Dos
Based program. The program is configured to print to LPT1
port and as a Laserjet. The system has been checked to
ensure LPT1 is a port and that that is where the printer
is connected to. The printer is a HP Laserjet 4 Plus and
can print from any windows based program. When we print
from the Dos Based program, we get error message: Printer
is not connected" Can anyone help me with a solution?
