Windows Update breaks printing

Sometime after installing two Windows updates last week for my HP LJ2300dn
I've been unable to print from any Windows app -- "Windows cannot print due
to a problem with the current printer setup", "Test page failed to print".
Printing from a DOS prompt (COPY CON LPT1) works and I've deleted/added the
printer and restarted several times using HP's drivers. The updates aren't
shown in the Add or Remove Programs list.

These are the updates:
- Hewlett-Packard - Other Hardware - hp LaserJet 2300 (DOT4)
Hewlett-Packard Other Hardware software update released in July, 2006
- Hewlett-Packard Company - Printers - HP LaserJet 2300 Series PCL 6 hp
printer software update released on August 22 2004.

Any ideas are very much appreciated.

Use System Restore to go back to the point before you installed the updates.

Looks like there is an update on this.

SYMPTOMS
Microsoft is aware of an issue that affects a limited number of printer
drivers. When you try to print by using one of these drivers, you may
experience the following symptoms.

Note You experience these symptoms after you install security update 925902

CAUSE
This problem occurs when a printer driver makes a call that has invalid
parameters to the Win32K.sys component. Microsoft has confirmed that this
problem affects the following printer drivers: . Ricoh LAN Fax Driver
. Gestetner P7026n PCL
. Ricoh Laser AP2600N PCL
. HP LaserJet 9050
. HP LaserJet 4200
. HP 4050 PCL6

Thanks, Alan. I wish I could tell you that solved it, but after reinstalling
the printer and trying to print a test page, it still comes back immediately
with the "Can't print" message.

Yes, many times. I've also removed the drivers and printer, reinstalled both,
deleted driver files from \windows\, and deleted related entries in the
registry. Not giving up though.

Looks like you have the proper file.
