printers on a jetdirect

server is a 2000 server, clients are 98 and xp using the
new RDP client. All the clients connect to a HP4200 using
a jetdirect and TCP/IP. I can not seem to get the server
to install the printer driver for the clients to use it.
In event veiwer it says please load the driver for the
4200 PCl6. I do that and it still won't work.

So can you use printers attached to the client through a
jetdirect on a server using RDP?

Or does the printer need to be directly attached to the
clients PC?

Yes, provided you use the latest rdp client, you can connect to
TCP/IP printers within a rdp session.

I would uninstall that driver from the server. 3th party drivers
are known to crash your printer spooler, if not worse.
Instead, use the information in Event 1111 (the *exact* name of
the printer driver on the client) and map it to a native driver on
the server.

Microsoft has a new utility to help with the driver mapping. It's not too useful if you already know how to create the user defined inf file, but might be nice for others
