deskjet 840c throws pages, doesn't print

I've been trying to fix a problem for a client. He has a previously working
Deskjet 840c, but since getting a new PC with XP Home, this doesn't work.

I downloaded and installed the latest driver pack from the HP site -
840-enu-xp.exe. On plugging in the printer, XP went through the normal plug and
play stuff, and said the printer was installed OK.

Test prints from both Windows and the HP Toolbox worked OK, but printing from
Notepad or Word just results in page throws of blank pages. Everything looks OK,
nothing weird in the queue etc.

I tried installing the printer on my laptop, which is also XP, but Pro. Exactly
the same result. Both machines are Service Pack 2.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be very grateful.

(Previous system was Millenium)

Time to consider purchasing a new printer...

There does come such a time, but the fault is surely software and not hardware,
which, speaking as someone who has been in IT for over 35 years, amuses me,
because printers have *always* been the recalcitrant bastards of the peripheral
world :)

Thanks anyway ...

I am no expert but had a similar problem with a somewhat similar printer.

1. Check ink levels.

2. Use printer software utility to print an alignment page.

3. Use printer software utility to clean inkjet nozzles.

That did the trick for the problem I was having.

Some inkjet cartridges do simply block up if not used for a few days. I am
not saying this is the issue in your situation but it might be to your
advantage to eliminate it as a probable cause.
