printer problems

The computer crashed and I had to restore the system from scratch. All is
well except now I cannot get the printer to be recognised. When I try to add
a new printer (none are listed) it brings up a message saying "operation
could not be completed, the print spooler service is not running."
I have no idea what this even means!
The computer is dell, the system windows xp, the printer a canon BJC-1000. I
do not have the original set up disc for the printer. I tried looking on the
Canon site but don't really have enough knowledge to follow it. Does anyone
have any advice that someone with only a little know how could follow to get
the printer recognised?

bjc1000Win2kXPv150.exe is the canon file you need. It is self extracting.
The key thing to remember is to NOT connect the printer until the
instructions tell you to do so.
