Printer problems

I'm using Windows 2000 Server with SP4 that is my PDC and my print server as
well. I have about 14 printers in there.

My question is:
When I add a network printer onto my print server it doesn't let me add
other existing printer from client workstation by just clicking on it in add
printers but have to add it through the URL (example: \\server\printhp8100)

When I do add the new printer to the network and when I do a properties on
the printer from client workstations I notice the bandwidth on my print
server maxes out. I severly need help on this one.

Hey Pentrix2,

Just to clarify your question a bit, are you saying that when you try to add
a new network printer to your print server your clients cannot access the
printers that are already on the server, unless you do the UNC path? And when
you do properties on that one new printer is when you have high bandwidth?

If so, what kind of printer is it? Is it connected to a hub or switch?

Yes, I can only connect to it through the UNC path. Just recently I'm able
to connect to it through the printer listing but still get high bandwidth
when doing a properties or doing a test page to it. I'm using a cisco
catalyst 3548T switch and a Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 4250n - printer - B/W
- laser (network printer).

Thank you Nestor but that didn't fix the problem. Turns out to be a switch
problem.

The switch that the print server has about 8 servers on it and it's a
catalyst 2912XL that has only one Cat5 going to my main patch panel. With
only 1 line at 100MBps there's too much bandwidth congestion going on that
explains there's a bandwidth congestion and found out it's happening with all
my printers not just that one. But particular that new HP printer it eats it
up 3 times the bandwidth.

Oh the solution is to replace that switch with a newer with at least a
Gigabit line and maybe do 2 Gigabit lines.
