Printer not working

After no problems during the last couple of years using Windows XP and a HP 3100 printer i\I now get a message 'Printer is not turned on or disconnected' everytime I start the computer. All drivers and cables are OK. The same message came up when I tried to print from a HP 6L printer
Office 2003 was installed recently but the printer problem was there before Office was upgraded
Any suggestions

Have you tried "removing" the printer and reinstalling?
