strange shared printer install problem

M

Martin Smith

I have been trying to install a shared printer (HP psc2355p) on to some
new xp machines, put in to replace older no so good machines.
I was getting this error message "The server does not have the correct
driver for the psc2355p" and it invited me to supply an inf file, which
of course I had no idea where to find. Although an inf file ws produced
by running the printer install software, it too was "incorrect".
On the older, now redundant machines, also xp, everything went without a
problem when installing various printers, subject to the usual vagaries
of shared printing.
I have found a solution, temporarily attach printer to machine, install,
remove printer and it will then install as shared printer from another
machine. Lucky I have a very long usb cable around.
I wonder though, and perhaps someone here can advise me whether this a
problem with the printer drivers, newest ones from hp website or a
windows problem... I must admit I have never come across it before.
Any thoughts welcome, cheers

Without knowing what the filename of the *.inf in question and all the
different versions you might have, answering your question is impossible.

I have a feeling you will find that the Server "thinks" the driver is also
not installed when opening the printer properties when logon on the server.
I've seen this happen with HP device drivers that have upgraded. The new
driver does not understand registry data created by the old driver. The
best bet is to delete the old driver (this requires that no printer be
assigned this driver, either switch the queue to a different driver of
delete the printer) before adding the new driver.

Ah system reinstall. I'll bet you backed up files and settings. Did the
OS get installed on the same drive (C:, D:) as the previous install?

Look at the Shared Folders. Where does print$ point to?

I suspect the print$ share is not pointing to the correct location.
