Recently I have tried to set up an HP Deskjet 895C and an HP Deskjet 855C to
different Windows XP computers. Windows XP had the drivers for both
printers but I could not get either printer to work properly. Are older
printers made obsolete under Windows XP?

Had an OLD Epson 600 running on XP with XP's driver (actually furnished
through Epson) and it worked just fine. Epson's website did not have XP/W2K
drivers for this printer. Some features are not available with the on-board
drivers but the printer certainly worked just fine.

MS doesn't make the majority of drivers in XP but rather gets them from the
mfg so the HP drivers (from HP through MS) should work just fine just as the
(from Epson through MS) drivers did for the 600. Without the on-board
driver support I would not have been able to use the Epson under XP! I
would check to see if there are some other problems with these printers.

FWIW,
Len

No. Either of those should work if you use USB connections. Do *not*
try to use a disk of drivers that come with the printer - ones for
either of those are pre-XP and HP do not provide specific drivers, only
the generic ones in with the system. Start by booting XP with the cable
*not* connected, then power on the printer and plug in Hot. New
hardware should come up, and install the basic XP Deskjet drivers.
