Printer defaulting to Windows imager

Win XP Pro SP2
Printer on Network

On several ocassions my printer has defaulted to the Windows Imager and
asked to save the file instead of printing. The correct default printer
disapears and must be re-added. Each time I reset the default printer and it
worked fine for a while, only to default back to the imager.
Is there a registry setting to force the correct default printer, or an
alternate to the steps I have taken?

It defaults when it can't find the network printer. If the network printer
is available 24/7, it won't change. If it becomes unavailable for whatever
reason, it will default to whatever else is in your Printers & Faxes control
panel.

Is there a way to ensure that the computer re-defaults to the network printer
as soon as it comes back on-line?

:
This is on a laptop so if what you said was true, the computer would erase
all the printers everytime it was taken off it's docking station. This
doesn't happen on the other 200 laptops we have. It is only this one printer
2 people share and is on a network. This also only happens randomly, and not
every time the computer is unhooked from the network.
Any other ideas? thanks

Uninstall the Windows Imager. Then the only printer installed will be the
network one and it should find it each and every time.
