Print spooler

Had hard disk failure requiring purchase of new hard drive
and reinstallation of Windows XP Home. Use Brother
HL-1440 and Lexmark X83 printers. Continuously receiving
message:

"Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Error signature is:

szAppName: spoolsv.exe
szAppVer: 5.1.2600.0
szModName: ntdll.dll
szMod Ver: 5.1.2600.1106
offset: 000018bc

Occurs with both printers. When try to view printer
properties, sometimes neither printer appears as an
installed printer. Sometimes printer will start print job
several minutes later. When this occurs, printers
mysteriously reappear as installed printers. Have deleted
printers and reinstalled. Continues to occur. When
printer document queue is viewed, have difficulty
cancelling print jobs.
