Print spooler problems! Help me!

Suddenly this afternoon I can not print. Windows tells me that the print
spooler service is not running. I have started the print spooler several
times and verified that it starts automatically. No matter what printer
related action I try to take (install, delete, open properties, etc), I
recieve the message "Operation could not be completed. The print spooler
service is not running."

Again, I have already tried the starting the print spooler solution, but
when I try to do something in the control panel that involves printers, the
print spoolers stops.

Help, please.

First thing to try is a System Restore to a recent date when everything
worked.

Cari, Hi. I have same problem as Lee below. I did the Bruce Sanderson
instructions (cleanspl - etc., started spool function,. ...put in RPCSS
successfully)...still I can not add a printer...when I look at server
properties, it says spool service is not running. I think this is a virus
as well that hit back in Q4 2005.

I would like to do a system restore at least for the printer function
features. My Dell says I have to backup everything and wipe everything out.
I do NOT want to do this. I would have to start from whenever I bought
computer a few years ago (the old image). I just want to have the Windows
XP Home Edition valid for printing. Is there a download I can use to
restore my Windows operating system (print/spool functionality only)?

How can I best do this? Many thanks, John
PS. I am not familiar with System Restore?

Cari, Thanks it works now. I used this command ... found in another
section from Byte. This was the final command I needed. All is well.
Thanks, John

Start>Run>type SFC /SCANNOW (space between C and /)
and press OK. Have your WindowsXP installation handy for it
may ask for it. SFC = System File Checker
This action will look for corrupt or missing system files and ask
if you want to replace them.

Cari, The command did not work for me. Any further help? I keep getting
"The dependency service or group failed to start."

Thanks, Pat

I just recovered from the same problem. I found that I had two logon
accounts on the computer. I installed the printer on both accounts and
the printer started working.

1. Booted computer
2. logged on as other user.
3. Made sure spooler was running
4. (Re)installed printer.
5. Printer tested ok.
6. logged off
7. rebooted
8. Logged on as other user.
9. repeated steps 3 thru 7
