Print Spooler Problem

S

Sofia Engvall

Hi! :)

I'm running two Windows 2000 Servers as print servers. They both have the
DHCP Service installed but it's only running on one of them. The one with
DHCP running (8 scopes) has Service Pack 4 installed, the other Service Pack
3. Both have the 823980 patch installed. We have about 400 users though all
have not yet been moved to these print servers.

The problems started once users started to print on the servers. Especially
one department. The problem was/is that the print spooler shut down. I set
it to restart at once. It seem to take some time for it to realize it's not
ok though.

I searched the KB and found article 324183 that seemed to match our problem.
Since things were quite ok and the Service Pack 4 coming soon I decided to
wait for it rather than using the hot fix.

Another problem exists in the department with the most problems. Sometimes
the documents don't disappear from the printer queues. Not until I restart
the spooler. I think this is because of incompatible drivers on the client
machines.

I was planning to install SP4 a few weeks after the release but about two
weeks ago a new problem surfaced... I started to get Application Errors in
the print spooler. I see in the news group that others have had the same
problem. I only get these on one of the mashines, the one with the DHCP
scopes active.

The events looks like:
Source: Application Popup
Event ID: 26
Type: Information
Application popup: spoolsv.exe - Application Error : The instruction at
"0x77fcc641" referenced memory at "0xfffffff8". The memory could not be
"read".
Click on OK to terminate the program

The events are accompanied by popups:
Printers Folder
There was an error found when printing the document "Microsoft Outlook - PM"
to port-hplj4mp-02.
Do you want to retry or cancel the job?

I'm not certain if these errors are connected or not but I've never seen the
later before the previous occured...

Please help me to sort this out! :)

Thanks a million!!!! :)

/Sofia
