I am trying to work in powerpoint with a dark background. When I print it
for handouts I would like the background to be gone. How do I do this with
out changing things everytime I go to print.

Have you tried "Print pure black and white" in the Print window? I think
you'll find it in the bottom left corner.

If your background is a jpg imported straight on to the master page, that
funtion won't work. Then you'll either have to remove the jpg every time you
print (which can get quite annoying), or do it 'properly': Insert the
background image via Format/Background/Fill effects/Picture.

Hope that makes sense (and helps...)

Are you printing to a black and white printer ?

If so

View > master > slide master

View menu > black and white > right click the image > choose Black and white
settings > choose don't show
