Print Dialog window does not open in IE6

C

CTOS

OS: Windows XP Pro SP2 x86
All updates installed.

Clicking "File" > "Print..." or clicking printer icon in IE6 the Print
Dialog windows does not open and no errors appear on the screen; the Print
Preview window does open when that is selected. No errors are logged in the
System or Application logs. The Print Dialog window does open in other
applications, just not IE.

I noticed the behavior after I cleaned up a "Antivirus XP 2008" infection,
but I honestly don't know if the print behavior problem existed before the
virus infection.

I've run SFC, reinstalled/repaired IE using instructions found on various
websites, performed a Windows XP Repair install, all to no effect. I've run
a full malware scan using anti-virus and anti-spyware tools. I've also
scanned the system using Process Explorer, Autoruns, and HiJack This, with no
suspicious files found.

Installing IE7 may fix the problem, but where I work some business web apps
don't work with IE7.

Maybe a .dll needs to be re-registered? Anyone have an idea?

Thanks!

It's not 0 bytes, it's 597KB and ver. 5.82.2900.2180.

I'm installing Windows XP SP3 to see if that helps.

Problem still persists after installing XP SP3. I also installed IE7 just
see what would happen, same problem. I installed Firefox 3.0 and the Print
Dialog works.

I'll try the steps to repair/reinstall IE again, I might have missed
something. If that don't work I'll just re-image.

I found the problem file, setupapi.dll was located in c:\program
files\internet explorer\. Closing IE, delete/rename the .dll, re-open IE,
and problem is gone. This file is not signed by Microsoft. Malwarebytes
says it's a Trojan.BHO.
