Prevent popup

Lately i have begun to get popup ad's. These are a simple
browser with no buttons except the min/max/close options.
The status bar of this popup states "This ad is not
provided by or in association with the site you are
visiting".

I am on winXP and my XP firewall is switched on.
Appreciate any instructions in preventing this.
