Powerpoint display cycles infinitely with translucent background

I regularly use a high-resolution background image in my master. This works
fine when the images are either mostly dark (I then use light letters) or
light (when I use dark colored letters).

A quick trick I learnt for 'medium' colored images is to create a
translucent 'white' rectange and place it over the who image. This neatly
lightens the slide BUT seems occaisionally to cause PowerPoint to repeatedly
'scan' down the slide when it is in Normal View mode. When this happens,
Powerpoint effectively locks up and I have to kill it. Yet, presentation mode
works fine.

This is obviously a bug (why I am reporting it), but any clues as to a fix?
I realise that I could modify the image in a program such as Photoshop.

Hi Lee,

Don't ya just hate that. It is worse also with multiple objects that will
flick through one by one. And ti doesn't seem to matter how small the
background image is. I had one that waws 3 kb and it still scanned down.
