Powerfailure during hibernate process ...

I have a sony laptop running Win-XP Home SP2. I accidentaly disconnected the
power while windows was trying to hibernate. Since then, every time I choose
to hibernate the system, it logs me out and then hangs - displaying the login
screen (untill I turn it off).

It used to work perfectly with hibernation feature before that failure.

Please help me if you know of any file or any remainders of the failed
hibernation attempt that may be preventing the system from hibernating
properly?

Try disabling hibernation, rebooting, and then enable it again.
