My Win2K system's Power Options had been working flawlessly for over a
year with Standby. Two days ago I ran an MS Window Update to apply
security patches and now, after applying several of them, Standby no
longer stands-by. Options are still displayed, but the system ignores
them now.

This is sad as I just love saving power and now I can't. Also it's
sad because applying updates shouldn't hose systems, but what else is
new?

Any ideas?

I've reset the times for the screen, hard drives and Standby and
rebooted just to see if they might re-write/refresh the values, but to
no avail.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you are kind enough to offer.

Regards,
Dave

I believe that if a computer attempts to go into standby but is unable to do
so, an event will be logged in the system log (or perhaps it's the
application log). It may indicate that the computer attempted to go into
standby but couldn't because SomeProcess.exe prevented it. So, I'd say the
first step is to see if there is a process that is preventing it from going
into standby.

I heard of this happening a few times so far.
I think that the general observation is that:
- Disabling antivirus will workaround the issue
- Setting standby for 5 minutes or less will still work

I strongly suggest that you contact Microsoft Support to resolve this
issue. If it is found to be a Windows bug then all charges will be refunded.

Thanks, Ray and Jason.

The system in question is home, so I'll have to work on it later. I
should have checked the Event Log, but ran out this morning with my
belt unbuckled and shoes untied. Who's got time to check events when
the kid has to get to school and the dog needs water. Anyway.

I'm not sure about when we're talking about disabling AV s/w. Do you
mean before installing the updates?
